Collections

It is the aim of DiFaB to compile photographic images in order to create the most comprehensive representation of the Byzantine empire possible and to make this material publicly available. The main emphasis of the collections are free-standing monuments, which - unlike objects preserved in private collections or museums - are subject to substantial changes and even destruction. As the photographic collections made available for incorporation in DiFaB reach from the 19th century up to today, it is possible to trace the condition of these monuments in three centuries.

The photographic material in DiFaB comes from the following main sources:

  • Photographs Collection of the Department of History of Art, University of Vienna
  • Private collections of Horst Hallensleben and Marcell Restle
  • New, digital photographs
